The Western Cape Government is the first regional member on the African continent to adopt the use of SNOMED CT, the most comprehensive global clinical terminology. Adoption of SNOMED CT in Western Cape will enable health information exchange between the region’s participating medical institutions, in addition to satisfying requirements of the 2014 National Health Normative Standards Framework.
The Western Cape is the third largest populated province in South Africa after Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, with a population of approximately 7 million. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability of the Western Cape Department of Health was a major game changer in the fight against COVID-19. The ICT-related lessons from the last three years will be leveraged to do business differently, including improving access to care beyond the walls of our health facilities, and to address the quadruple burden of disease...

Last year, SNOMED International announced it would transition to more frequent releases of the SNOMED CT International Edition rather than just twice a year. Since January 2022, the organization has released the clinical terminology at the end of each month.
Consuming the release on a monthly basis is not required, however, as Members can continue on a biannual schedule if they so choose – there are numerous benefits to being able to access SNOMED CT more frequently. Frequent releases support better interoperability, as organizations and entities can now consume release content that is more aligned with other organizations, for example. As well, it makes it easier to complete smaller projects...

At the last April 2022 business meetings, SNOMED International staff, along with its governance bodies and community of practice, gathered in London to learn about the latest SNOMED CT and SNOMED International advances.
One of the topics of particular interest to many in the audience (and beyond) focused on the organization’s efforts over the past year to engage and support those who would like to contribute content to SNOMED CT. As SNOMED CT evolves and matures, and as the organization works to become more agile and responsive to community needs, it has taken a number of big steps over the past year in the delivery and development of its products. That includes making the SNOMED CT International Edition available on a monthly basis (frequent releases) and making it easier for users to contribute to it.
The linked Q&A with Dr. James Case, SNOMED International’s Chief Terminologist, explores these initiatives and their impact on SNOMED CT and its user community...

The Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) community and SNOMED International have formalized their long-time relationship with a five-year collaborative agreement that will benefit both of their user communities.
OHDSI is a non-profit, global research collaborative that provides open-source solutions and products to enable analysis and sharing of health and observational data. Coordinated by the Columbia University Department of Biomedical Informatics, its mission is to improve health by empowering a community to collaboratively generate the evidence that promotes better health decisions and better care.
SNOMED CT is a core terminology within OHDSI's common data model: Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP), allowing the use of other terminologies and classifications through computable linkages.
Effective April 29, 2022, the collaboration provides OHDSI and its user community with comprehensive ontologies on specific healthcare domains and content such as devices, social determinants of health, disease severity scores and modifiers of cancers, as well as better concept definitions and resolutions of composite concepts in large-scale observational research. In return, OHDSI and its user community can provide SNOMED International with information and feedback on clinical validation, frequency of use data, and validation of SNOMED CT content modeling. Ultimately, continuous feedback shared regarding identified content gaps will benefit both user communities as we move forward together...

Towards the end of 2021, SNOMED International shared its intention to extend the core of SNOMED CT’s structured clinical terminology to deliver an open, standalone terminology in support of the scope of content within the International Patient Summary (IPS) for non-Members.
The IPS Terminology will provide advanced terminology features for non-Affiliates to use in their IPS implementations. Now released in its beta version for focused stakeholder testing and feedback, the IPS Terminology will be accompanied by a User Guide to support implementers in non-Member regions to understand the features, capabilities and limitations of the IPS Terminology package.
Contact releases@snomed.org for information on how to review the IPS Terminology as well as information on the mechanisms and timelines for providing feedback. To view the IPS Terminology via browser, visit https://ips-browser.snomedtools.org/.
