To the SNOMED International Community,

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the news of Stewart Jessamine’s recent passing. He was an excellent member of the IHTSDO and SNOMED International community that we will dearly miss.

Please take a moment to read a note crafted from SNOMED International giving tribute to his life’s work and service to SNOMED CT. We will take the opportunity to offer tribute to Stewart at our upcoming 2019 April Business Meeting in London.

Sincerely,

Don

Beyond clinical data capture, one of the prime uses of SNOMED CT is to enable clinical data analytics. SNOMED CT enables the full benefits of EHRs to be achieved through effective retrieval and reuse of clinical information.

In this demonstration, SNOMED International clinical engagement leads, Dr.’s Peter Hendler and Charles Gutteridge, walk you through a brief SNOMED CT introduction before solving a hands-on clinical dilemma enabled by SNOMED CT, using simulated clinical data.

Read more and watch the demo on the SNOMED International website.

Contact info@snomed.org for more information, or with questions for Peter and Charles.

Changes to service level agreements (SLA) are initiated as a way to manage the organization’s resource load as well as preserve balance among content submitters. Changes to the current SLA are predominantly due to the need to progress the multi-year Quality Initiative underway.

Changes to the SLA are in effect as of January 17th, 2019 and include:

Request Commitment:
Change: Reduced from 2500 to 1500 requests for better resource planning and management

  • A minimum total of 1500 separate requests within set timelines and meeting submission criteria will be added to the next release, provided the request is not marked for clarification, appeal or rejected. This change from 2500 to 1500 is being implemented to better assist the organization understand our resource allocation supporting content requests.

Request Balance:
Change: Reworded for better clarity

  • SNOMED International also reserves the right to assess the number of submissions made per country per release to create balance of submissions and fairness in equal resolution of requests.

Requests:
Change: Reworded for better clarity

  • A single request may not exceed 150 concept additions or changes.  No further request batches of the “same type” may be submitted in a single editing cycle in order to circumvent the Bulk submission process. Once a total of 150 additions or changes have been reached, no further requests of the same type will be accepted during the release cycle. Slight overages of the 150 will be considered on a case by case basis.

These changes will predominantly affect Members (National Release Centres) and other authorized submitters including collaboration partners, clinical reference groups, etc. and take effect January 17, 2019.

Access the full Service Level Agreement here to review the entirety of the changes. For additional information, please contact info@snomed.org.

With use of SNOMED CT on the rise internationally, SNOMED International has responded to requests for implementation support with the creation of the User Support Reference Group.

The purpose of the Group is three-fold:

  1. To identify implementation issues and discuss resolutions
  2. To enable discussion on implementation best practices and user perspectives about SNOMED CT implementation.
  3. To provide a channel for a more proactive and responsive support.

Geared at SNOMED CT Implementation course graduates, Member country representatives, advanced end users, and vendors, the User Support Reference Group will collect and better understand user’s implementation experiences with the goal of developing potential solutions.

Scheduled to meet on a quarterly basis, the agenda of the reference group will be topic based in nature and place emphasis on user presentations. The group’s scope will include implementation use cases and techniques, release updates, and other topics such as maintenance, natural language processing, and data analytics, etc. The SNOMED International Education Team will provide education guidance to the group as requested.

Interested in Participating? The User Support Reference Group will hold an overview webinar at 11:00 UTC on 28. February. Register for the webinar on the User Support Reference Group Confluence page.

SNOMED International is pleased to announce that Dr. James Case, Head of Terminology, will transition to a half time position with the organization following his recent retirement from the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Effective Monday January 14, 2019, Jim will continue to provide strategic direction and editorial leadership in all areas related to SNOMED CT core content.

Jim’s continued tenure with SNOMED International lends continuity to the SNOMED CT Community of Practice, specifically where content expertise and SNOMED CT editorial guidance is concerned.

Jim joined the NLM in January 2010, where his primary role was development and maintenance of the US extension to SNOMED CT and addition of US content into the International release of SNOMED CT. It has been the United States’ ongoing commitment to IHTSDO that originally enabled Jim to provide his terminological expertise and guidance to the organization on a part-time secondment basis in June 2015. From this time, Jim has consistently provided leadership across SNOMED CT content development and mapping areas.

Moving forward, Jim will continue to work closely with all areas of the business to evolve the content of SNOMED CT to best meet the needs of the International community and terminology implementers.

Please join me in warmly acknowledging Jim’s new tenure with the organization. Please contact myself or Jim with any questions or clarifications.
