Simplex - What, Why, and How?

Simplex is designed for SNOMED International Members and Affiliates seeking a cost-effective solution for creating, maintaining, and distributing SNOMED CT extensions. It caters to those who require basic components and derivatives of SNOMED CT, have budgetary constraints, and possess the capability to independently perform ongoing maintenance of the created content.

At this time Simplex supports extending the International Edition or other SNOMED CT products that have an "edition style package". These are Australia and Germany.
Most nations use an "extension style package", those can not be extended using Simplex at this time.

Simplex offers a free toolkit that assists in generating SNOMED CT extensions tailored to specific needs and customization requirements of SNOMED International Members and Affiliates. It allows users to create translation extensions, subsets, maps, and other derivatives, empowering them to manage SNOMED CT content without the need for expensive external tools or services.

Users can utilize Simplex to:

  • Create language extensions by importing translations and generating publication-ready translation packages.
  • Generate subset derivatives by importing non-publication-ready subset files and generating the required reference set files.
  • Generate simple map derivatives by importing non-publication-ready map files and generating the required reference set files.
  • Create minimal-modeled concepts to be included in your extension.
  • Release SNOMED CT extensions, select content for extensions, and perform other associated tasks.

Simplex is available as an online service hosted by SNOMED International. Users can access it at any time to perform tasks related to creating and managing SNOMED CT extensions.

At present, Simplex is only available for a selected number of early adopters, but we expect increased capacity during 2024.

To become a Simplex user, please reach out to the SNOMED International Implementation Support Team at implementation@snomed.org

Simplex is ideal for stakeholders with very basic extension requirements who lack access to another extension management and release environment. These users can benefit from Simplex as a cost-effective solution for creating, maintaining, and distributing SNOMED CT extensions.

To access and utilize Simplex, SNOMED International Members and Affiliates should contact the SNOMED International Implementation Support Team (implementation@snomed.org) for initial setup and induction.

The Implementation support team will assists with account setup, however, ongoing content management and maintenance of the extension content are the sole responsibilities of the users. Additionally, users should establish their own distribution solutions for disseminating the created extensions to their intended audience.

SNOMED International does not provide ongoing support for managing and maintaining extension content with Simplex. Users are responsible for the content they create.

Our service is automated to reduce the need for technical support, allowing more customers to join without additional costs and enabling users to work on their own schedules.

For help, refer to our comprehensive documentation and resources. If you have feedback or suggestions, please contact us at implementation@snomed.org.
