We have received an enquiry from the UK regarding the following 2 concepts in SNOMED CT:
191788006 | Feminism in boy (finding) (synonyms femininity / effeminacy)
191789003 | Masculinism in girl (finding) (synonyms masculinity / tomboyishness)

It would appear that the source of these concepts is from Read Codes v2 and they seem to exist as index descriptions in ICD-9-CM linked to gender identity disorders.

Given the current discussions on sex and gender I wondered whether it would be appropriate to add this to that broader discussion?

We need to establish whether these are considered as appropriate concepts for use and if not whether they should be inactivated or replaced by a concept/description which is more appropriate.

  1. I agree about deleting these entirely. Not only are they subjective and not medically relevant, terms like effeminate and tomboyish are often labels ascribed indiscriminately to gay, lesbian, and transgender people. However, given lack of definition these terms could be applied to intersex conditions such as AIS.

It's good to see the UK is on the right track! Gender stereotypes are hugely important to eliminate where possible and we should do our best to make sure SNOMED doesn't enable such stereotypes. (Apologies for typos, wrote this on my phone, sorry!)

EDIT: I've added both of these terms as well as an edit to "Frotteurism" in my second version of my list of suggestions, which I've attached here.

    1. Matt Cordell some additional terms/updates are available in this version, posted above (just in case you're curious)

  2. The following concepts have been inactivated following discussion at the Internal editors meeting and this group:

191788006 | Feminism in boy (finding) (synonyms femininity / effeminacy)
191789003 | Masculinism in girl (finding) (synonyms masculinity / tomboyishness)
