Abstract

Constraining SNOMED CT to match the requirements of its users is key to ensure the successful implementation of SNOMED CT. Creating subsets that are relevant and useful for the context of use is an important part of many SNOMED CT implementation projects.

This tutorial explores the principles for creating good quality SNOMED CT subsets. It also introduces reference sets for sharing SNOMED CT subsets, and a demonstrates a tool for creating reference sets.

Objectives

After attending this tutorial, the participant should be able to:

• Explain the difference between a subset, a value set and a reference set
• Explain the principles for creating good quality SNOMED CT subsets
• Describe the purposes for which reference sets may be used
• Summarize the different types of reference sets and provide example use cases for each
