Managing the components used to represent the large number of clinical data entries in EHRs is an important part of the work related to maintaining the integrity and accessibility of health information. Reference Sets can be used to specify what components are applied to specific parts of the Health Record at a given point in time. In addition, reference sets also support temporal information management, as a result of the robust versioning mechanism that allows historically consistent views of SNOMED CT components and derivatives.
