We have received a query regarding potential duplication of these concepts. While atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis are distinct morphologies in SNOMED, it’s unclear whether this distinction translates effectively to the two disorder concepts. Could these be duplicates?

Hi all
Would anyone be able to provide advice on these concepts please?
Ian Rodrigues
Hi Elaine Wooler given that SNOMED already (correctly) has a distinction between atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis I think its reasonable to keep both terms. Having said that, for the retina, I'm not sure anyone clinically would be able to make the distinction between the two, but maybe one of our retina experts would be able to give their opinion on that.
As atherosclerosis is a specific type of arteriosclerosis, it might be better if 870346008 | Retinopathy due to atherosclerosis (disorder) | is a child concept 95691008 | Arteriosclerotic retinopathy (disorder) |

We should get the Retina specialist group up and running soon to address queries like this one. Once we have the glaucoma report and gets approval from AGS/EGS, I think we reflect and hopefully think it was a worthwhile process and move to phase 2!

I've advised the requester that we will keep both terms until they can be reviewed at a late date by the Retina specialist group. Many thanks for the input.
