When referring to "processing an expression template ", it refers to the process of creating is used, a number of steps must be performed to create a valid SNOMED CT expression which that conforms to a specific expression the given template. 

In this section, we explain the steps that are required to process a template into a valid expression are presented and explained. This includes the tasks required prior to processing the template, the tasks required when compiling the template, and the post-processing validation checks. An overview of the involved steps in illustrated belowinvolved in processing an expression template. We also explain the pre-processing and post-processing tasks involved.

The figure below illustrates this process. Please note that these steps do not necessarily need to be performed in this order.
