SNOMED International has two awards: the annual Award for Excellence, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. If you have any questions, please contact SNOMED International at governance@snomed.org. 

Award for Excellence

SNOMED International's Award of Excellence is awarded to a single recipient each year. It is given for outstanding contributions to the improvement of SNOMED CT and/or its successful implementation in any aspect of health and social care. Prior winners have been:

  • 2011: Ian Green, UK
  • 2012: Dion McMurtrie, Australia
  • 2013: Kristina Brand Persson, Sweden
  • 2014: Judith Warren, USA
  • 2015: Jim Case, USA
  • 2016: Daniel Karlsson, Sweden
  • 2017: Bruce Goldberg, USA
  • 2018: Michael Lawley, Australia
  • 2019: Mark Jurkovich, USA
  • 2022: Ajelandro Mauro, Chile and Vicky Fung, Hong Kong, China
  • 2023: Pim Volkert, Netherlands and Scott W. Campbell, USA
  • 2024: Hyeoun-Ae Park, the Republic of Korea

Individuals must be nominated by two people, at least one of whom must be a member of the Community of Practice (defined here as someone who is not a SNOMED International employee).

The deadline for nominations is 31 March.

Lifetime Achievement Award

SNOMED International’s) Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals for sustained, outstanding contributions in the development or promotion of SNOMED CT and for global leadership in the terminology field.  Prior Award winners have been:

  • 2014: Anne Casey, UK
  • 2015: Kent Spackman, USA
  • 2016: Guillermo Reynoso, Argentina
  • 2017: Betsy Humphreys, USA

  • 2019: Lies van Gennip, Netherlands and Stewart Jessamine, New Zealand
  • 2022: David Markwell, UK and Jeremy Thorp, UK
  • 2023: Keith E. Campbell, USA and Vivian Auld, USA
  • 2024: Md Khadzir Sheikh Ahmad, Malaysia

If you would like to nominate a person to receive the award, please complete the attached nomination form and send it to SNOMED International at governance@snomed.org. Please note that individuals must be nominated by two people, at least one of whom must be a member of the Community of Practice (defined in this context as someone who is not a SNOMED International employee).
