The SNOMED CT Maturity Framework is a five level model that can be used to categorize implementations based on a scale of increasing SNOMED CT capabilities.
This framework can be used SNOMED International has designed this maturity model that allows users to assess the current status maturity level of implementation and facilitates planning for achieving greater levels of benefits from SNOMED CTa SNOMED CT implementation, or to help plan for higher maturity levels which provide additional benefits.

| Level 0: PLANS TO USE SNOMED CT SNOMED CT is not used yet used, but there are plans to do so. Currently, Clinical information is stored as free text or using other code systems. | ||||||||
| Level 1: MAPPING TO SNOMED CT SNOMED CT is not directly recorded in the clinical records. It's used indirectly, through using a mapping mechanism. | ||||||||
| Level 2: SIMPLE CODE SYSTEM SNOMED CT is directly recorded in the clinical records. It's used as a flat list of codes. | ||||||||
| Level 3: HIERARCHY SNOMED CT is directly recorded in the clinical records. It's used as a hierarchy of codes to support various system functions. | ||||||||
| Level 4: SEMANTIC NETWORK SNOMED CT is directly recorded in the clinical records. It's used as a semantic network of relationships applying with simple ECL filtersqueries. | ||||||||
| Level 5: ADVANCED USE with full MRCM and ECL support, and the ability to create, classify and query new clinical meanings. |
