Group Discussion:

Nursing pain assessment value set review: Pain Quality terms

  • see Pain assessment page for discussion info
Erica Culp/ Christine Spisla

Our discussion on pain quality opened several interesting points in our discussion:

  1. The way pain is expressed is influenced  by a person's background, culture, language and experiences. Which makes it difficult to discussion with in an International context.
  2. Should these types of expressions of an individual's pain be coded or free text?

The group will move the discussion forward to pain by location concepts and revisit pain quality later in our pain assessment discussions.  These same points may arise again in several different aspects of our pain discussion. For example pain assessment based on location and quality: 59139008 |Crushing chest pain (finding)|  or even 364760007 |Finding of headache character (finding)|)

@ Christine/ Erica: to post list of pain location values from US pain assessment study.
